Tonya Harding: I knew ‘something was up’ before Nancy Kerrigan attack

Disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding said she knew “something was up” in connection to the kneecapping of Nancy Kerrigan.

But the defiant Harding, 47, stopped well short of saying she knew ex-husband Jeff Gillooly had arranged for Kerrigan to be attacked to help her Olympic chances back in 1994.

Harding said she caught wind of shenanigans one or two months before Kerrigan was attacked in Detroit during the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships.

“I knew that something was up,” Harding told ABC News in footage and transcripts released on Tuesday.

“I did, however, overhear them talking about stuff, where, ‘Well, maybe we should take somebody out so we can make sure she gets on the team.’ I go, `What the hell are you talking about?’ ”

The sensational 1994 figure skating scandal is back in the news, thanks to the hit movie “I, Tonya,” with Margot Robbie playing the lead role.

When ABC asked if she’s ever apologized to Kerrigan for the attack, Harding said she had and then added: “Enough apologizing!”

Harding said she’s unfairly painted as the villain: “I’m always (portrayed as) the bad person and I never understood that.”

The attack on Kerrigan prevented her from competing for one of two US Olympic spots. Harding won the competition and Michelle Kwan, then 13, finished second.

“It makes you cringe hearing it because you know how much that it had to have hurt,” Harding said of famous footage of Kerrigan screaming in pain, “Why?!”

Despite not competing in the championships, the US Figure Skating Association sent Kerrigan to the the Lillehammer Olympics ahead of Kwan.

The Olympic gold was won by Oksana Baiul with Kerrigan scoring silver. Harding finished eighth.

In the wide-ranging ABC interview, Harding touched on several personal issues.

On her demanding — and now estranged — mom, played in the movie by Allison Janney: “She wants forgiveness, she wants to see me, she wants to make amends, she wants to meet and be a part of the family. Hell no.”

Now on her third marriage, Harding said she’s a happy mom and wife: “My family, we are a loving family. I get my second chance in life to be loved and be happy.”
