Cold weather causes Niagara Falls to nearly freeze over

While much of the East Coast is facing chilly weather — including New York City, which is expected to be just 11 degrees when the ball drops in Times Square Sunday night — the mercury in Niagara Falls dropped to zero this weekend.

Still, tourists flocked to the natural wonder to admire the spectacular icicles that formed.

According to Niagara County Weather Wire, the area’s lowest recorded temperature was -18.9 degrees in January 2011.

But the water that continuously plunges down 165 feet has never fully frozen.
