Dog is sole survivor in deadly Kansas plane crash

A dog is the sole survivor of a fiery plane crash in Kansas that killed three people on board and another dog, officials said.

The single-engine plane was flying from Missouri to Maryland on Saturday when it crashed and burst into flames in woods near the city of Oldenburg, according to Indiana State Police.

The Civil Air Patrol said Monday that two of the victims, Louis Cantilena and Paul Schuda, were both majors in the US Air Force’s civilian auxiliary, Eagle Country Online reported.

They identified the third victim as Cantilena’s daughter Amy.

Cantilena was reportedly piloting the plane he was using to pick up his daughter from the Kansas University Medical Center, where she was an M.D. and Ph.D. student.

The CAP said the plane, which had just refueled in Indiana, went down after experiencing engine failure.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

The surviving pooch, which showed up at a nearby residence, was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Cantilena was a medical professor at Bethesda University and a member of CAP since 1997. Schuda, a family friend, had been a member since 1998.
