Janoris Jenkins is the latest blow to Giants

The season is over for Jackrabbit.

Janoris Jenkins, the Giants’ best cornerback, went in Wednesday for ankle surgery. He was already placed on injured reserve, ending his season after 11 games. Jenkins has been dealing with an ankle issue for two months and aggravated the problem Thursday. He took back an interception 53 yards for a touchdown in the 20-10 loss to the Redskins and damaged the ankle while diving into the end zone.

It was a turbulent season for Jenkins. His play on the field was solid, but not as strong as it was in 2016, his first year with the Giants after signing a five-year, $62.5 million contract. Jenkins did not return to the team following the bye week, and also did not alert the team as to his whereabouts, violations of team policy that prompted a one-game suspension handed down by Ben McAdoo.

The Giants signed defensive back Khyri Thornton to replace Jenkins on the roster. They also moved defensive end Romeo Okwara to the designated to return injured reserve list, meaning he could come back and play this season. Okwara, on IR with a knee injury, has a three-week window to begin practicing.
