Scottish-born law student-turned-movie star Gerard Butler — best known for his role in the 2006 movie “300” — has listed his exquisite Chelsea loft for $5.99 million. The 3,150-square-foot home, at 139 W. 19th St. in Chelsea, was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest in 2010.
He bought the unit for $2.575 million in 2004.
It comes with 13-foot ceilings bearing exposed beams, open living spaces, a large upstairs master suite and 1,200 square feet of private outdoor space. The loft, located in a former manufacturing warehouse, was gutted and renovated by architect Alexander Gorlin.
Peruse the listing photos, and you may notice a film-like feel. That’s because production designer Elvis Restaino created the home’s “modern vintage” feel. Special touches include 11-foot-tall mahogany doors, a ceiling fresco in the foyer, plaster walls stylishly “chipped [and] mottled” with age, massive columns supporting limestone lions and “a myriad of crystal chandeliers,” according to the listing.
The open-concept arrangement features a dining area with a “medieval-style” wood-and-iron table, a living area that has brick-framed windows, an open chef’s kitchen and a home theater, which (unsurprisingly, given Butler’s profession) serves as the loft’s “centerpiece.”
Its screen is framed by Indian columns, a wooden arch support from a Bronx cathedral and a stone lion’s head from an old library.
Butler told Architectural Digest that the renovation took four years to complete.
“More than anything,” he told the magazine, “I use my apartment as somewhere to retreat and spend time on my own. New York is such a frenetic, crazy city, so I love to use the place for just some peace and quiet.”
Butler — who last month had a motorcycle accident in LA, but still managed to walk the red carpet for his new film, “Geostorm” — has said the incident changed his outlook. Butler told Entertainment Tonight that it “made me really appreciate how precious life is because I could have landed any number of ways that would have taken me out.”
We hope this new perspective will include creating another gorgeous home in the city.
