David Cone is still waiting for a Yankees call

Speaking to 400 people Wednesday morning at a fundraiser in Stratford, Conn., to benefit Bridgeport’s McGivney Center after-school programs, David Cone was asked about being interested in the Yankees’ managing job.

“I would welcome the opportunity to interview for the position,’’ Cone said. “But in the end I know the Yankees will hire the right guy.’’

John Flaherty and Cone threw their names into the ring at Joe Torre’s Safe At Home Foundation dinner, but neither has been contacted by the club to interview for the job that opened when Joe Girardi was informed on Oct. 24 that he wasn’t being brought back.

Wednesday, Carlos Beltran interviewed for the job. He was the sixth person to go through the process. Rob Thomson, Eric Wedge, Aaron Boone, Hensley Meulens and Chris Woodward preceded Beltran.
