Eagles go all-in with surprise trade for star running back

The Eagles are going for it.

Philadelphia, at 7-1 and atop the NFC East, traded a fourth-round pick for Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi, according to multiple reports Tuesday, as the trade deadline loomed later in the day.

Ajayi, a Pro Bowler last year, when he ran for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns, was Miami’s shifty starter, though his numbers had fallen this year. He’s averaging 3.4 yards per carry in seven up-and-down games, in which he’s rushed for 465 yards on 138 carries. The 2015 fifth-round pick is coming off a 13-carry, 23-yard performance against Baltimore in a 40-0 shutout, which may have contributed to the 4-3 Dolphins trading away a starter.

Ajayi figures to step into the starting role in Philadelphia, which was led by the aging, overpowering LeGarrette Blount and second-year speedster Wendell Smallwood.
