Drinking red wine could boost your fertility: study

If you’re partial to a glass of red and looking to get pregnant, then listen up: Women who drink one glass of red wine a week have better fertility than those who don’t, a new study has found.

According to scientists at Washington University, this could be due to the high levels of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red grapes, cocoa and blueberries that protects the fruit’s cells from biological stress.

The study, which looked at 135 women between the ages of 18 and 44, had participants note how much alcohol they consumed each month and then conducting ultrasound scans on each of the women to calculate how many remaining viable eggs they had. They found those who regularly drank red wine, regardless of other factors such as age and income, had a better ovarian reserve.

Although before you swing by the store for a carton of Cab Sav, keep in mind the study only showed benefits for women who drank moderate amounts of red wine – which works out to be around five or more glasses each month.

And as with all research, the results should be considered with caution, as the study hadn’t proved wine was solely responsible for the fertility boost. Roger that.
