Red Sox fend off late rally, clinch AL East title

The Yankees made a late run at the AL East title — and kept the pressure on the Red Sox with a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday — but they’re headed to the wild-card game Tuesday thanks to Boston’s 6-3 win over the Astros.

Trailing in the division by five games as recently as Monday, the Yankees got back into the division race by winning four of five heading into Saturday, while the Red Sox faltered during the same stretch, losing four of five.

But on Saturday, either a Yankees loss or a Red Sox win would give Boston its second straight division title.

So while Aaron Judge and CC Sabathia led the Yankees to another victory in The Bronx, the Red Sox finally took care of business by beating the Astros at Fenway Park.

Just after the Yankees took a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Red Sox did the same in Boston, and then David Price got out of a jam in the seventh.

The Yankees finish the regular season Sunday against Toronto and now know they will play to host Minnesota on Tuesday in the wild-card game, with the winner moving on to the ALDS.
