Facebook gives Mueller data on Russian election ad targeting

Facebook reportedly gave special counsel Robert Mueller highly detailed information about ad buys and targeting options used by Russia during the 2016 election cycle.

The social media giant, answering a search warrant, gave more information to Mueller than it did to Congress last week, sources close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal.

The revelation means the Mueller now has crucial data in reconstructing how Russia manipulated the social media to meddle in the presidential election.

Facebook gave more information to Mueller than Congress, because the company didn’t want to do anything that could damage the special counsel’s probe, sources said.

The social media platform’s unwitting role in the Russian plot has come into greater focus in recent weeks, with word of ad buys and targeting strategies used by Moscow-tied entities.
