Cuomo stays mum on whether Columbus monument should go

The state’s most prominent Italian-American politician is steering clear of the debate over Christopher Columbus.

For three days, The Post sought Gov. Cuomo’s position on whether monuments of Columbus should be removed in New York City.

The response: silence.

While the Italian explorer is revered for discovering the New World, critics condemn him as a colonizer who enslaved indigenous Caribbean people.

Mayor de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito ignited the furor when they said Columbus monuments — including the 76-foot statute in Columbus Circle — should be considered as part of a review of controversial historical structures.
