Floods could help hundreds of gators escape reptile park

More than 350 gators are about to break free from a reptile park outside Houston — and just one more foot of rain will give the beasts the boost they need to bust out, according to new reports.

The owner of Gator Country, a sanctuary in the nearby city of Beaumont, says hundreds of his beasts are getting closer and closer to the top of their fence as Tropical Storm Harvey rains down — and he can’t hold them in much longer.

“We’re less than a foot a foot from (water) going over the fences,” Gary Saurage told KDFM.

“All of these are certified, high fences, but when it won’t quit, it won’t quit. We’ve worked around the clock and I don’t know what else to do. We’re truly tired. Everybody’s at the end of it, man. We don’t know what to do.”

The facility’s two largest gators, Big Al and Big Tex, are in trailers, while its crocodiles and venomous snakes have been moved to higher ground, the station reports.

But forecasters are expecting at least another foot of rain on the Lone Star State by Thursday — and Saurage is worried it will wash his livelihood away.

“I’ve never seen (the water) stay anywhere near this before. The staying power of this storm is just unbelievable,” he told KDFM.
