Shark takes huge bite out of paddleboard

A sneaky shark took a bite out of a paddleboard off the waters in Cape Cod Wednesday – days after one was caught ravaging a seal just several miles south.

The board was left with an imprint of the sharp-toothed fish’s chompers in a chilling photo posted on Cape Cod National Seashore’s Facebook page.

The attack happened around 10 a.m. at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet – located less than seven miles north of Nauset Beach, where a shark was recorded in the waters gutting a seal Monday, the post said.

The paddleboarder, who was 30 yards offshore in three-feet deep water during high tide, wasn’t hurt.

“Seals were observed swimming nearby,” the Facebook post said. “Staff from the national seashore, the MA Division of Marine Fisheries, and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy are investigating. More details will be shared as we have them.”

Marconi Beach was closed off to swimming.

The recent seal attack prompted Barnstable County Commissioner Ron Beaty to push for a controversial “shark hazard mitigation strategy,” which would hook and kill great whites.
