More Starlin Castro trouble is a top prospect’s second chance

SEATTLE — Starlin Castro will go on the DL Sunday for the second time in less than a month with a right hamstring problem.

According to Joe Girardi, Castro re-injured the hamstring Wednesday in Minneapolis beating out an infield single to third. He remained in that game and played nine innings Thursday and Friday against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

“It’s frustrating and he is frustrated,’’ Girardi said of the second baseman whose 97 hits in 73 games were second on the team to Aaron Judge’s 104 in 93 tilts entering Saturday night’s action. Girardi said Castro, who is hitting .307, balked at going on the shelf, but the move couldn’t be avoided when the area became discolored.

“Wednesday he iced it after the game. Thursday he said he was a little tight. Friday the blood showed up, and that’s when we knew we had an issue.’’

Tyler Wade will take Castro’s place on the 25-man roster, and Girardi said he will platoon the left-handed hitting Wade with Ronald Torreyes at second.

Wade filled in for Castro the last time he was on the DL. In nine games he hit .107 (3-for-28), but Girardi said toward the end Wade put together better at-bats. In 77 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Wade batted .313 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
