Shark washes up on Coney Island beach

It wasn’t exactly “Jaws,” but Coney Island beachgoers were starstruck by a small shark that washed up on the shoreline Saturday.

The tiny, dark-colored creature attracted a crowd as it writhed on the sand, close enough for some to snap photos and post them to social media.

“This shark beached itself and then was helped back into water by onlookers,” Scott Berliner posted on Instagram, with a close-up of the shark.

“It’s a common occurrence given fishing that happens off the pier,” a Parks Department spokeswoman said of the 11 am sighting.

Lifeguards notified the NYPD’s Aviation Unit, which scanned the beach and “didn’t see any additional shark activity,” the spokeswoman said.

The beach was not evacuated, according to the Parks spokeswoman.
