Cops nab alleged baggage bandit at Newark airport

Newark airport passengers and police nabbed an alleged baggage bandit before he could carry off any checked luggage, authorities said Wednesday.

Brooklyn resident Dashon Devine, 48, was caught helping himself to luggage at the Terminal C baggage claim at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday, Port Authority police said.

A private security guard first confronted Devine and when he couldn’t show a boarding pass, the suspect went into a nearby bathroom, Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo said.

Devine came back 10 minutes later, went back to the same baggage claim and lifted another bag, cops said.

“In the final instance, the suspect was reportedly confronted by the true owner of a piece of luggage the suspect was carting away, “ according to Pentangelo, “the suspect (then) discarded the luggage near a trash can and left the terminal.”

Responding cops caught up with Devine a short distance away, police said. Officers also found Devine was carrying a heroin and a glass pipe, officials said.

He was booked into Essex County Jail for theft, hindering arresting, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and jumping bail – from two outstanding warrants.
