In the surest sign yet that it’s high time for Opening Day, we present this bee invasion that happened in Thursday’s Spring Training game between the Rockies and Padres.
With the Rockies up handily and everyone just four outs away from being able to leave the stadium and let our insect overlords roam the grounds in peace, a swarm of bees descended on the Peoria Sports Complex in Arizona, causing pitcher, catcher, batter and home plate umpire to fully hit the deck.
That’s Trey Wingenter on the mound for the Padres, with Luis Torrens catching and Daniel Castro at-bat for the Rockies. All were at their nimblest when they needed it most.
The very determined bees also surrounded a crowd mic just a few feet from the Padres dugout.
The bees only delayed play for a few minutes, local reports said. Castro struck out shortly thereafter, the Rockies won 10-5, and everyone went home, away from the bees.
Regular-season baseball returns Sunday. Will the bees follow?
