One-year-old dies after falling unconscious at homeless shelter

A 1-year old girl died Friday after she was found unconscious inside of a Queens homeless shelter, police said.

Cops found little Kimio Williams unresponsive inside a Quality Inn on Queens Boulevard in Woodside that doubled as a family homeless shelter around 1:55 p.m.

Emergency Services cops rushed Kimio to Elmhurst General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Shelter residents told the Post that while the hotel is safe and clean, they feel stranded by the city bureaucracy.

“There’s a lot of frustration with the families living here,” said Tania, 30, who moved into the hotel last October and is supposed to move out to Long Island City but is having trouble getting a housing voucher. “It’s tough to get out.”

She added: “I think some people come in here with a lot of baggage mentally and emotionally. We are just not being provided the right resources to help us get back on our feet.”

Tania said she didn’t know the family, but frequently heard young kids crying. She declined to give her last name due to her living situation. “I’ve heard some horror cases where the case workers go into the rooms and it gets nasty.”

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We offer our condolences to the family and will provide the family with any and all support that we can during this difficult time,” said Isaac McGinn, press secretary for the Department of Homeless Services.

The Administration for Children’s Services told the Post that they are investigating the incident with NYPD and await the New York City Medical Examiner’s review.

Police say that there is currently no criminality suspected and no arrests have been made.
