‘I’m going to save Alex’: Brother’s last words before siblings get electrocuted

Two Texas brothers were both fatally electrocuted playing in a park when one tried to save the other.

Alex Lopez, 12, and his brother, Isaiah Lopez, 11, died on Wednesday at the park where they grew up playing in Fort Worth, Texas.

Police said the brothers were hanging out with friends when Alex stepped in a puddle near downed power lines and was electrocuted.

“Go get help. I’m going to save Alex,” his younger brother Isaiah reportedly told friends, according to the Dallas Morning News.

But when Isaiah tried to grab his older brother, he was also electrocuted to death.

“Alex was usually the protector and this time it was Isaiah,” their former stepmother, Angela Jenkins, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 6:15 p.m., but could not get to the boys because the power lines had started a fire.

The brothers were pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m.

“Given the nature of the injuries received and the hazard still at the scene. The crews had to make the difficult decision at that point that they had to prevent any further injury and not allow anyone into the area until those lines could be de-energized,” Fort Worth Fire Department Lt. Kyle Falkner told the Star-Telegram.

The family has planned a candlelight memorial on Friday at the park where the brothers died.

A GoFundMe page was created by parents at the International Leadership of Texas charter school, which both brothers attended, to cover the funeral expenses.
