Crayola hints at replacement for retired yellow crayon

Crayola is feeling blue.

The company announced Friday that a hue in the “blue family” will replace the company’s retired yellow crayon.

Crayola was expected to reveal Dandelion’s replacement at a Friday morning event in Times Square — but Melanie Boulden, its senior vice president for U.S. and global marketing– said the company would instead wait until May for the announcement.

“I can share two pieces of information with you today,” Boulden said. “The first is that the new color will be part of the blue family. And the second is, this summer, we are going to invite our fans to help us name the new color, because we want you all to be a part of Crayola history.”

The company said on Thursday that Dandelion would be put out to pasture.

“I think retirement’s going to be my wildest adventure yet!” an animated Dandelion crayon said in a Twitter video. “Why don’t you join me? It’ll be awesome!”

Meanwhile, online prospectors are already hawking bulk lots of “rare” and “retired” Dandelion on auction sites, trying to make a quick buck.
