Instagram has originated some pretty outrageous beauty trends: from succulent, sprouting manicures and lips that look like sparkling geodes to something called clown contouring.
But, according to Yahoo Beauty, makeup artists have reached new absurd heights: Now they’re painting their thighs.
More like lavish temporary tattoos than a way to blend or obscure skin discoloration or blemishes, thigh makeup involves painting entire artworks on the gams using eye shadow, eyeliner and brow pomade. The results are like something out of Salvador Dalí’s fever dream: haughty faces with heavily mascaraed eyes and luscious pouts, swirly candy-cane stripes, and iridescent mermaid scales.
Yahoo dismisses the trend as a “total waste of precious product,” but clearly its fans don’t view their shadows and liners as “product.” One wouldn’t call Pat McGrath’s ephemeral, Kabuki-style runway makeup — which she does for such brands as Dior, Margiela and Prada — a “waste of precious product,” for example.
There’s a new strain of beauty and makeup trends that aren’t concerned with making someone more attractive or beautiful, but are about artistry and expression. Thigh makeup is a way for both pros and amateur beauty enthusiasts and artists to show off, or refine, their technical prowess — or perhaps just revel in their own weirdness. The surreal results may look bizarre, even ugly, but they are mesmerizing to behold.
