Why these designers are leaving NYFW

Proenza Schouler announced Monday that after February’s New York Fashion Week, the label will be departing from future NYFW schedules, with its sights set on Paris.

The design duo behind the New York-based luxury label, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, has instead decided to present its pre-season and mainline collections during Paris haute couture week, which takes place twice a year: in mid-January and early-July.

The brand released a statement saying that the decision to only show its collections twice a year will hopefully “[align] to the realities of commerce today.” It’s a sensible choice. New clothes hit sale racks only a couple of months after they debut.

The current fashion calendar has been compared to a never-ending merry-go-round because of the many capsule collections (pre-spring, pre-fall, resort) designers must create to keep up.

Many others have lamented the demanding fashion calendar and are also breaking away from NYFW. Tommy Hilfiger, Rebecca Minkoff and Rachel Comey are all headed to LA this season. Opening Ceremony showed its collection at the David H. Koch theater in early January, and celebrity favorite Rodarte is also showing in Paris this February.
