Giants punter: Pittsburgh return not as big of a deal as I thought

PITTSBURGH — Brad Wing did not expect the duration of his stay with the Steelers would be just one season. After a solid 2014 rookie year, he came in second last summer in a kicking derby with rookie Jordan Berry and on Sept. 4, 2015, was traded to the Giants for a seventh-round draft pick, arriving the same day the team cut veteran Steve Weatherford.

Sunday, Wing will punt against the Steelers for the first time.

“I knew as soon as I traded here, you look at the schedule and I saw them on the schedule and you go ‘I can’t wait for that game,’ ’’ Wing told The Post. “It’s kind of died down. I think it’s not going to be as big of a deal as I thought it would be last year,” Wing told The Post. “It’s kind of just another game, another week, we really have to win this one.”

The Steelers on Saturday added kicker Chris Boswell to their injury report and listed him as questionable with an abdominal issue. As insurance, they signed Randy Bullock, who last kicked in the NFL on Sept. 11 for the Giants, replacing the suspended Josh Brown. For the Giants, Bullock missed one of his three extra-point attempts in the 20-19 victory over the Cowboys.

In a move that indicates their offensive line depth is getting deeper, the Giants signed LB Deontae Skinner and waived OL Shane McDermott. It is likely OL Marshall Newhouse and Brett Jones will be active for the game.

Strange but true: The Giants’ red zone touchdown percentage of 60.7 is in the top half of the NFL but their 26 trips inside the 20-yard line is the second lowest total in the league.

Eli Manning, a 13-year veteran, apologized this week to Sterling Shepard, a rookie, for not throwing in his direction one time in the 27-13 victory in Cleveland.

“I don’t think it’s necessary, but I think it’s healthy,’’ Ben McAdoo said. “I think that’ll bring a relationship closer together. I gave Shepard a big hug after that just to let him know we were still thinking about him.”

This is the first game for Landon Collins after he was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for November.

“It caught me surprise, I definitely was excited about it,’’ Collins said. “It definitely was a goal of mine.’’ As for what is next for him, Collins said, “That’d be the year,’’ referring to the Defensive Player of the Year honor. “It’s possible, everything’s possible,’’ he said.

The latest physical issue to put Dwayne Harris on the injury report is a problem with his wrist, but he did not miss much practice time this week. Expect Harris to resume his punt return duties after Bobby Rainey and then Odell Beckham Jr. filled in last week.

“It’s based on Dwayne, his health, he’s our punt returner,’’ special teams coordinator Tom Quinn said.

Veteran Robbie Gould, the former longtime Bears kicker, is struggling. He has missed three extra points in the past two games, but as of now, the Giants are sticking with him.
“I told him at some point in time we’re going to call his number to really make a big one for us and we trust him to do it,’’ McAdoo said. “Just keep swinging.”
