Rihanna’s favorite creepers aren’t her own

Q: As creative director of Robert Clergerie, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, you’ve just designed 35 new versions of the brand’s “Roel” women’s brogues. Why’d you choose this style?

A: It’s representative of where it all started for Robert. In 1981, he launched his brand featuring two men’s-inspired brogues for women. He had a vision that chic, cool women would want to wear men’s shoes. This seems obvious now, but it was revolutionary and daring then.

Q: If you had to pick a pair to wear yourself, which would it be?

A: Ah, it’s like choosing among your children. I have this shoe in its classic black version. I am classic in my personal shoe choices.

Q: Both Robert Clergerie and your namesake (ready-to-wear and accessories) collections have a lot of famous fans. What’s your top celebrity moment?

A: I thought it was cool when Rihanna wore Robert Clergerie raffia creepers to the World Cup final in Brazil.

Q: In your opinion, what constitutes a great shoe?

A: One that makes the wearer feel wonderful. Shoes are very emotional.

Q: The holidays are upon us; what’s on your wish list this year?

A: Time to enjoy my home in the English countryside with my husband [artist James Webster] — the ultimate luxury.
