Food delivery service to offer couriers medical coverage

It’s about time your burrito delivery guy got some health insurance and stock options.

Homer Logistics — a third-party delivery service for Manhattan eateries like Dos Toros, Chop’t and Pinkberry — said Tuesday it will offer medical coverage and stock options for more than 300 bike couriers.

On the insurance side, the startup is in talks with providers including Cigna, Anthem and Aetna, with plans to select one of them for coverage beginning early in 2017, according to Homer founder and Chief Executive Adam Price.

Homer’s couriers, whose wages currently start at $15 an hour, also will begin receiving stock options in the private company after working 2,000 hours.

The new perks, which will also be paid to entry-level software developers, are a way of accommodating employees who work odd hours rather than a set 40-hour workweek in the course of a year, Price said.

“One of the challenges of the contract model is that workforce engagement and retention are horrible,” Price told The Post.

Price singled out competing on-demand services like Uber and Postmates, which have taken a principled stand against hiring full-time workers in favor of contract labor forces.
