MTA board members want the agency to create new, and more visible, public-service announcements warning riders to stand well back from the edge of subway platforms.
The initiative comes amid a rash of pushing and falling incidents in stations — but the MTA isn’t on board yet.
“It needs to be reinforced,” said Andrew Albert, a board member and the head of the New York City Transit Riders Council. “Don’t be a victim. Know who is around you.”
Albert wants the transit agency to more forcefully remind riders to stand behind the yellow lines at the edge of platforms, pay attention to their surroundings and not lean over the edge looking for trains — and stand against back walls if they’ve been drinking or are not feeling well. He wants PSAs in every station and even on the platform floors by the yellow lines.
The MTA did not commit to following through, but said it will “continue to update and enhance our public-information campaigns to keep our customers and employees safe.”
