Athletes make a show at the polls — as Kaepernick won’t vote

Colin Kaepernick is sitting out of Election Day, too.

The 49ers quarterback, who has drawn national attention this season for his controversial, sitting/kneeling protest of the national anthem, told reporters on Tuesday he had no plans to vote in the presidential election.

“No,” Kaepernick bluntly told a San Francisco Chronicle reporter when asked if he had visited the polls yet, and he continued the refrain when pushed further about whether he would vote.

“No,” he said again.

Kaepernick’s political apathy is surprising considering his fight for racial justice in America, but not unexpected since he has made it clear throughout the campaign that he strongly opposes both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

“It was embarrassing to watch that these are our two candidates,” Kaepernick said after the first presidential debate in September. “Both are proven liars and it almost seems like they’re trying to debate who’s less racist. And at this point … you have to pick the lesser of two evils. But in the end, it’s still evil.”

While Kaepernick was avoiding all polling places Tuesday, many other professional athletes, including Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, WWE star Bella Brie and Dodgers slugger Adrian Gonzalez, cast their votes and took to social media to encourage others to do the same.
