J.J. Watt apparently has found Miss Right (Now).
The Houston Texans defensive end, who is out for the season following back surgery, has been linked to soccer star Kealia Ohai since July. While the athletes had kept their romance under wraps, Ohai confirmed the status of their relationship on the 2 Up Front podcast, as discovered by Terez Owens.
“The rumors are true. We are dating,” said Ohai, who plays forward for the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League. “I’ve known J.J. for a really long time, and we’ve always been really great friends, and yeah, I’m really proud of him for everything he’s been going through, but it’s been pretty crazy with all the rumors.”
Watt, 27, has kept quiet about his personal life, and the 24-year-old Ohai — who was named Thursday to the US Women’s National Team roster for a pair of friendly matches next month — has yet to appear on Watt’s social media feeds. The NFL phenom shared on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” in September that his future lady love would have to have a tough exterior to handle the critics.
“I think it’s having the whole world watch your every move, and any female you’re seen with is automatically your girlfriend,” Watt said. “Bringing a girl into this life and the scrutiny and the criticism that comes with it — no matter how perfect the girl is — people are gonna rip her to shreds because that’s the social media world we live in today.”
Watt made a cameo appearance on Kate Hudson’s Snapchat back in April, sparking rumors of a possible romance. Watt said dating is harder than it seems.
“People [I know] think that I’ve never dated before or whatever,” he told NFL.com last year. “But I’m trying. I’m trying. I’m just unsuccessful. My schedule’s so crazy and life’s busy. It just hasn’t worked.”
Perhaps he’ll have better luck with Ohai at his side.
