Giants safety’s self-hyped return goes south fast

Nat Berhe thought he was cleared for takeoff. But there was a problem with the launch.

The Giants safety, who tweeted a photo of a missile launch Monday as a sign of his return, was back at practice Wednesday, but couldn’t make it through the entire workout. He remains in the concussion protocol and likely will miss his third straight game Sunday, in London against the Rams.

“We had to pull him early,” Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. “He never got to [the] contact [part of] practice.”

With Berhe and rookie safety Darian Thompson (sprained foot) both out, undrafted rookie Andrew Adams has started the last three games at free safety.

Rookie cornerback Eli Apple (groin) is hopeful he will return Sunday after missing the win over the Ravens last Sunday. Apple practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and took part in some team drills.

“I felt good,” Apple said. “I was able to move around a little bit. … I just got to take it day by day, don’t want to push it too much and tweak it again. I got to play it smart.”

Long snapper Zak DeOssie (ankle), right tackle Marshall Newhouse (calf), and Thompson didn’t practice. … Linebacker Keenan Robinson (knee) and cornerback Trevin Wade (ankle) were limited. Running back Rashad Jennings (thumb), who was active Sunday after missing the last three games, is still on the injury report, but he practiced fully.
