Junkie accused of robbing bank to repay money he stole from mom

He’s an accused burglar – and a mama’s boy.

An admitted drug addict is charged with desperately trying to rob three Flatiron District banks so he could repay money he stole from his mother, according to a new complaint filed in Manhattan federal court.

Daniel Steven Bertini, 39, was caught on surveillance video using a crowbar to unsuccessfully break into the tellers’ areas at KeyBank on East 22nd Street around 4:30 a.m. Monday and a Park Avenue South Bank of America about 25 minutes later, the court papers say.

But after coming up empty-handed at both locations, he then fled several block to a Chase bank on Sixth Avenue near West 18th Street and managed to swipe about $915 in coins, documents state.

Cops caught up with Bertini at the Chase, where he resisted arrest, the papers said. Bertini suffered two cuts to his own head, requiring stitches.

Bertini was allegedly caught on surveillance at the three banks wearing a grey striped hoodie, dark pants with a white stripe and toting a red bag. Cops also recovered the coin-filled bag and a crowbar.

Bertini admitted to cops that he had a cocaine habit and stole money from his mom – and that chose he Chase bank at random because “he wanted to pay back his mother before she noticed the missing money,” according to the complaint.

Court records show he was held without bail following a court appearance Monday.
