Rashad Jennings’ injured thumb ‘just the cost of playing football’

Giants running back Rashad Jennings’ status against the Redskins appeared uncertain as he walked across the locker room Tuesday with a splint on his left thumb and a heavily wrapped hand. But Jennings said he plans to practice Wednesday and doesn’t expect to miss any time.

Jennings, who hurt his thumb in Sunday’s win over the Saints, said X-rays were negative and it primarily is a pain-management issue. He doesn’t believe his play will be affected by the injury, even if he has to wear a wrap or cast.

“I plan on practicing, going out there and running, going through the normal stuff,” Jennings said Tuesday. “We’ll tape it how I need to and keep playing ball.

“It’s just something you’ve got to deal with, the cost of playing football. I don’t look at it as slowing me down at all. Just part of the game, that’s really it.”

After rushing for 75 yards on 18 carries in the season opener, Jennings was limited to 27 yards on 13 attempts against the Saints. Shane Vereen has rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries, with a fumble. Neither player has scored a touchdown.

Right tackle Marshall Newhouse (calf) was wearing a walking boot on his right foot after suffering an injury in the fourth quarter against the Saints. If Newhouse is unable to play against the Redskins, he would be replaced by veteran Will Beatty or second-year lineman Bobby Hart.

Beatty, who missed the 2015 season with injuries and wasn’t active for the first two games of the season, insisted he would be ready to play Sunday.

“I’ve got a lot of snaps under my belt,” Beatty said.

Safety Mykkele Thompson’s second season will end the same as first — on injured reserve.

After spending his entire rookie season on IR with a torn Achilles tendon, Thompson again had his season cut short by a knee injury he suffered in his first-ever regular-season game against the Saints.

Rookie cornerback Michael Hunter was promoted from the practice squad to replace Thompson. Hunter, signed by the Giants on May 6 as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State, had been waived on Sept. 3.

The Giants also terminated the contract of tackle Byron Stingily, who had been placed on IR after sustaining a concussion in the preseason.

Add Eli Manning to Carson Wentz’s growing number of fans.

“He looks poised in there, throws the ball, sees things well, runs around, makes some plays,” Manning said after the Eagles rookie’s second straight win. “He’s got a good feel for what’s going on.”
