Why Luis Severino’s bullpen dominance isn’t ticket to rotation

Luis Severino is still viewed by the Yankees as a starter, but Chad Green gets the ball Wednesday night against the Mets at Yankee Stadium in the third of four Subway Series games.

“He’s lined up perfect,’’ manager Joe Girardi said of Green, who gets the start because Ivan Nova was dealt to the Pirates Monday and was slated to start Wednesday. “He threw the day [Friday] that Nova threw. He threw 67 pitches and he’s lined up perfectly.’’

For the foreseeable future it looks as if Green, who is 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in seven games (three starts), will remain in the rotation.

“Right now we will possibly use him [as a starter],’’ Girardi said.

Severino has been impressive in two relief outings since being recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 27. Sunday against the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla., Severino threw two scoreless innings and reached 100 mph with several fastballs.

“We brought him up for a need. We needed innings and distance [in relief],’’ Girardi said of Severino, who was sent to SWB with an 0-6 record and a 7.46 ERA in seven starts. “Do we envision him as a starter? Yes. I imagine he won’t be in this role full-time, but I can’t tell you for sure. We envision him as a starter is the best way to answer that.’’

Severino, who went 7-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts for SWB, was labeled untouchable at this time a year ago. To say he has regressed is accurate, but the Yankees still believe the 22-year-old is a future member of their rotation.

When Gary Sanchez is promoted from SWB Wednesday to DH against Mets lefty Steven Matz, the Yankees will likely send outfielder Ben Gamel to SWB and carry three catchers. It’s possible Brian McCann could DH against right-handers and Sanchez versus lefties.

Outfield prospect Aaron Judge returned from the Triple-A DL Tuesday night for SWB and went 1-for-3 with a double in a six-inning stint. Judge was out for three-plus weeks with a knee injury that didn’t require surgery.
