Maintenance train derailment throws LIRR into chaos

The morning commute on the Long Island Rail Road is a mess Monday after a work car train derailed in Queens, resulting in the cancellation or diversion of some westbound trains.

The non-passenger maintenance locomotive derailed at about 11 p.m. Sunday night east of Woodside.

There were no injuries, officials said.

Passengers who normally arrive through Penn Station are being diverted into the Atlantic Avenue station in Brooklyn instead.

Commuters taking the Babylon, Hempstead, and Huntington/Port Jefferson branches will be the most affected, but MTA officials warned riders to expect delays throughout the morning.

The agency said 15 trains on five of the LIRR’s 11 branches are affected.
