Stringer looks to curb cancer as public pools open for summer

The city made a splash Wednesday, officially opening public swimming pools for the summer.
And as kids like these took the plunge at Astoria Park in Queens, city Comptroller Scott Stringer used the start of the summer swim season to introduce a new initiative to provide free sunscreen at beaches, parks and pools in an effort to prevent skin cancer.

The plan is already in place in Miami and Boston.
“This program can be funded at virtually no cost to city tax payers, through public-private partnerships,” Stringer said at a press conference in Greenwich Village, as pool-goers were greeted with clear skies and sunny conditions.

While officials are still in the planning phase, and have yet to choose potential brands or suppliers, Stringer said the sunscreen would be high quality and top of the line.
