Active-shooter drill sparks lockdown at Joint Base Andrews

An active-shooter exercise at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland turned into a “real world” active shooter situation Thursday, officials said.

Andrews officials posted a 9:16 a.m. tweet reporting the possible active-shooter scenario and ordering all personnel to take “shelter.”

About 15 minutes later, a second tweet warned that the incident was still ongoing in Malcolm Grow Medical Facility, which is on the grounds, and that first responders were on scene.

The base, about 20 miles from downtown Washington, DC, is home to Air Force One, which is used by the president.

Rodney Smith, the patient advocate at the Andrews medical facility, said an active-shooter exercise was scheduled for Thursday morning, and then he was told it was a “real-world” situation.

He said he was on lockdown and didn’t have any more information.

“First it was an active-shooter exercise. Then it came back ‘real world,'” Smith said by phone Thursday morning.

Smith said the situation was unfolding at the newer of two buildings at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility on the base. He was in the older building.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
