The mystery behind the elusive subway balloon man has been popped.

In the past three months, more than 30 people have posted pictures on social media of whimsical balloon animals decorating the N, 6 and L trains. The Post reported on the phenomenon on May 15, but the identity of the inflated ego behind the creations was unknown — until now.

Sean Cunningham, a 31-year-old Astoria resident, has been revealed as the subway clown.

“I walked into a dollar store by my apartment and saw a pack of rubber balloons and thought it would be a cheap way to make people smile,” Cunningham told The Post.

“In New York, everyone is so busy and stressed and don’t look at you on the subway,” Cunningham says. “So it’s nice to bring a little joy into their day.”
