‘I could smell blood’: Club shooting survivor recounts night of terror

He stormed toward her and her friend on the dance floor, shooting wildly while leaving a trail of bodies behind him.

Jeannette McCoy, 37, told The Post on Sunday how homophobic ISIS sympathizer Omar Mateen seemed hellbent on killing as many people as possible during his rampage.

“I saw him coming toward us. This guy wanted to kill all of us,” she said.

She heard him fire more than 100 rounds during the mayhem.

“The shots started, and they didn’t stop. It was, ‘pop, pop.’ He wouldn’t stop shooting. It was like he was at a gun range,’’ she said.

“People were dropping because they were getting shot. People were desperate to get out, trampling each other. I could smell the blood. I could smell the fear.

“People were getting shot and dying right next to me.”

McCoy said the male pal she was dancing with was shot but is expected to survive.

“I have a friend in the hospital who took a bullet for me,” she said. “He was behind me . . . He’s in surgery.”

McCoy said she had gone to the club just to blow off some steam.

“I came so I could relax with my friends and have a good time,” she said. “[Mateen] didn’t start shooting until late.

“I lost my brother in the crowd. Everyone started to run in different directions.”

McCoy, whose brother survived, ended up taking off her shirt and using it as a tourniquet for a victim during the mayhem.

“Juan — he’s the bartender — got shot in the leg,” she said. “I took my shirt off to stop his leg from bleeding.”
