Border patrol cops seized nearly $4 million worth of heroin and cocaine that smugglers shipped to the port at Red Hook from South America, making it the third-largest haul in the history of the US Customs and Border Protection’s New York office, officials said Friday.
Agents found 121 pounds of heroin and 8 pounds of cocaine bundled into more than 1,000 tiny packages and packed into a shipping container of vegetables that had come from Ecuador by way of Miami.
The heroin had a street value of $3.5 million while the cocaine was worth about $135,000.
“This is a significant seizure,” said Robert Perez, director of the border patrol’s New York field operations. “This intercept prevents a large quantity of drugs from getting to the streets and in the hands of our children.”
Cops have not yet made any arrests in the case, officials said.
