In this most unpredictable of Premier League seasons, the impossible looks as if it’s going to happen. After Tottenham slipped up and drew with West Brom 1-1 on Monday, Leicester City, pegged by many “experts” for relegation before the season began and a 5,000-1 shot to win league, is just one win away from clinching their first top-flight title.
Claudio Ranieri’s squad has three games to get that victory, the first chance coming against, as luck would have it, Manchester United next Sunday morning. Despite recent struggles, United is the dominant team of the Premier League era, which dates back to 1992-93 season, having won the league a staggering 13 times in that period. If the Foxes are to be champions, might as well confirm it against the division’s iconic team, right?
If Leicester does not win next weekend, that’s OK. Up next are Everton and Chelsea, two teams that have somehow managed to be even more disappointing than the Red Devils this season. Earlier this season, when people first started giving credence to the idea the Foxes could win it all, this run-in may have looked intimidating. Now? Not so much. It’s honestly hard not to imagine newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez and Co. winning one of these games, especially because they’ve only had one stretch of three games all season in which they didn’t earn a victory.
But even if they don’t, they’re still probably going to win it all. While one win clinches the title outright, any combination of three points (either earned by Leicester or dropped by Spurs) does the job.
It’s not over just yet, but it’s a good time to be a Leicester fan.
