Worker dies at West Village condo construction site

A construction worker died on the job Thursday when a piece of wood struck him as he attempted to dismantle scaffolding from a West Village luxury condo, cops said.

Louis Mata, 32, was on the ground floor of The Printing House on Hudson Street near Leroy Street, working to remove the scaffolding, when the debris plummeted from the 10th floor of the structure, killing him, police said.

When cops arrived on scene at 5:05 p.m., they found Mata, of Port Chester, N.Y., unresponsive with severe neck and back injuries. EMS rushed him to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The building has seven open violations with the city Department of Buildings, four of which are considered “immediately hazardous,” records indicate.
