Bartolo Colon gets Mets’ biggest cheers on Opening Day

The ace of the Mets’ young pitching staff may be uncertain, but its most popular member is not up for debate.

Bartolo Colon remains the people’s choice.

That’s what the large crowd at Citi Field indicated Monday afternoon when the 42-year-old right-hander was announced prior to the Mets-Phillies game at Citi Field, receiving the largest roar of the Opening Day festivities.

Matt Harvey got a nice ovation. Noah Syndergaard beat him. And Colon wiped the two young co-aces away.

The celebration included former Mets Rusty Staub, John Franco and Edgardo Alfonzo raising the team’s 2015 National League championship banner in right field.
