Trump and Clinton are way ahead in Michigan

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton command huge leads in Michigan — races key to any hopes of catching the presidential front-runners, pollsters said.

In the GOP battle, Trump holds 42 percent support among Wolverine State Republicans, far ahead of Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 19.6 percent, Sen. Ted Cruz with 19.3 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio at 9 percent, according to the poll commissioned by Detroit station WJBK-TV.

There are 59 GOP delegates, distributed proportionately, at stake in Michigan.

Kasich, from neighboring Ohio, needs to do well in Tuesday’s Michigan primary to build momentum going into next week’s winner-take-all battle in the Buckeye State.

On the Democratic side, Clinton leads Bernie Sanders 66-29. Even if Sanders doesn’t win Michigan, he’ll have to improve on this score in a state that should be more receptive to his economic populist message.

The poll was taken on Saturday afternoon.
