New York says 91 city schools are among worst in state

State officials on Friday identified 91 New York City public schools as among the worst in the state — and in need of significant interventions.

The schools — all among the lowest 5 percent in the sate — include three long-struggling Bronx middle schools.

Those schools — JHS 162, JHS 22 and IS 117 — have until late June to boost their performance or face “receivership,” meaning the state would appoint an outside individual, school district or nonprofit to run them.

An additional 24 schools were given until June 2017 to boost their performance or face the same fate.

One school that would have fallen into that category will close instead this June, officials said earlier.

City schools made up 48 percent of the 188 schools statewide identified as low-performing “priority” schools — a slight improvement from the last time the state Education Department made the designations.

All 27 of the schools facing receivership are part of Mayor de Blasio’s renewal program, which is pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into turning them around.
