William Shatner will boldly go to the all-new “Star Trek: Mission New York” fan fest in the Big Apple in September, organizers announced Thursday
“I’m looking forward to coming to New York for this giant celebration of the 50th anniversary. It will be reminiscent of the original Star Trek convention in 1972 in New York,” Shatner, 84, said.
Back then, it was held at the Statler Hotel, now the Hotel Pennsylvania, where it was expected to attract a modest gathering of 500 people – a highly illogical estimate. More than 3,000 crazed, nerdy fans showed up — and fandom has exploded in the decades since.
The Stardate Sept. 2-4 extravaganza is planned for the Javits Center and will mark the 50th anniversary of the cult classic series, which has lived long and prospered since Shatner’s Capt. James T. Kirk first uttered “Space, the Final Frontier …” over the opening credits in 1966.
The event also will feature interactive exhibits, exclusive merchandise, celebrity guests, panels, screenings and more.
The franchise’s 13th film, “Star Trek Beyond,” will hit theaters in July. A series for the CBS All Access streaming service is planned for January 2017.
