The best Oscar fashions of the past 16 years

Each year, awards season concludes with the Oscars — also known as the red-carpet Olympics. Since its inception in 1929, the ceremony has been a mainstay for spectacular dresses: backless, strapless, sparkly, many-layered in silk chiffon. But not all gowns are sartorial gold.

At the Academy Awards, where good taste often trumps individuality, the most memorable fashion moments are typically the least predictable. No, the most prestigious night in cinema probably isn’t the best time to go for a shocking swan dress (sorry, Björk), but it is possible to respect the formality of a glamorous affair while serving up a little something extra.

As proven over the last 15 years, that “something extra” can be anything: a particularly flattering silhouette, a striking detail or even just a pretty color against impeccable skin. Here are our picks for each year’s best-dressed attendees since the start of the 21st century.

2000 - "Cider House Rules" may have scored two gold trophies at the 2000 ceremony, but the night belonged to its leading lady, Charlize Theron, who in this tangerine Vera Wang dress redefined "Old Hollywood" for the new millennium.Evan Agostini/Getty Images
2001 - Call it pale fire: Not long after securing a Golden Globe for her role in "Nurse Betty" in 2001, Academy Awards presenter Renée Zellweger stunned on the red carpet in a lemony yellow vintage gown by Jean Dresses.SGranitz/WireImage

2002 - Halle Berry made history as the first black woman to win Best Actress, for "Monsters Ball." In her unforgettable, semisheer Elie Saab creation, she was also one of the first successfully to pull off the "naked" dress trend. Eat your heart out, Rihanna.Steve Granitz/WireImage
2003 - It's true: A redhead in green is an A+ combo. And for Julianne Moore, the only thing better than this Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche stunner (designed by good friend Tom Ford) was landing double Oscar nods in 2003 -- Best Actress for "Far From Heaven" and Best Supporting Actress for "The Hours."AP Photo/Kim D. 2004 - Though only invited to present, Angelina Jolie stole the show in 2004 thanks to this liquid dream by Marc Bouwer. Cosmopolitan put it best: "The dress drapes on her curves and shows off her assets in all the right ways."Carlo Allegri/Getty Images

2006 - So Michelle Williams didn't win Best Supporting Actress for "Brokeback Mountain" in 2006. So what? You'd be hard-pressed to find any list on Oscars fashion that doesn't include a photo of the actress in this breathtaking dress by Vera Wang -- the delicate ruffles! that décolletage! that color!Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
2007 - Red carpet all-star Nicole Kidman has no shortage of "yes!" moments. Her best? The show-stopping Balenciaga number she wore to present in 2007. Sure, not every critic appreciated the dramatic bow, but it certainly stood out in a sea of ho-hum couture.AP Photo/Amy Sancetta

2008 - Mermaid gowns can be cheesy -- but not when made by Jean Paul Gaultier. 2009 - In 2009, Oscars presenter Sarah Jessica Parker opted for Dior haute couture. Belted and fluffed up with layers of tulle, the dress was a perfect fit for Carrie Bradshaw.Jason Merritt/Getty Images
2010 - As a presenter with an eye for style, Zoe Saldana one-upped everyone in 2010 with this Givenchy couture dress. The ombre creation is a prime example of a well-played fashion risk.EPA/PAUL BUCK

2012 - Though famous for a certain pink frock she wore to accept the 1999 Best Actress statue for "Shakespeare in Love," Gwyneth Paltrow delivered her top look to date as a presenter at the 2012 ceremony in this caped Tom Ford creation. Sleek and forward-thinking, the dress is 100 percent "now."Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
2013 - Metallic on the red carpet can get dull fast. Luckily, Naomi Watts took silver into new territory in 2013, when she was up for Best Actress for "The Impossible." In her Armani Privé cutout gown, the actress made for an exceptionally sexy, high-fashion superhero.Jason Merritt/Getty Images
