Man saved by miracle drug after heroin OD on bus

A man was caught on video shooting up heroin — and overdosing — on a crowded bus outside Philadelphia.

Michael Meeney, 25, of Middletown Township was revived on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority bus by the lifesaving drug Narcan — and then arrested a few days later, on Tuesday, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Chitwood said the video was released to illustrate how the heroin scourge is affecting communities.

“Normally you see overdoses in a bathroom or vacant building, but this was at 1 p.m. on a public bus,” he said.

In the video, Meeney is seen shooting heroin into his right arm, looking dazed and then falling over.

Meeney was treated at a hospital and released.

“It’s a great thing that Narcan saves lives, but it doesn’t do anything for the addiction,” Chitwood said.

Meeney was collared at 1 a.m. Tuesday and jailed after being found with packets that tested positive for heroin.

“At least he is in the system and he can get treatment in the system,” Chitwood said.

In the unedited version of the video, Chitwood said several passengers are seen rushing to help Meeney, according to thereporteronline.com. Passengers also called 911.

The FDA-approved Narcan nasal spray is used to reverse the effects of opioids.

It was the 58th time Upper Darby police had successfully used it since December, the department told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
