Aroldis Chapman missing for day — not for fateful Manfred meet

TAMPA — Aroldis Chapman wasn’t in Yankees camp Monday, but didn’t meet with commissioner Rob Manfred, who could give the closer a suspension this week.

“He asked for permission in advance, and we provided it and we will see him [Tuesday],’’ GM Brian Cashman said following a workout at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Because Chapman was not slated to throw in a bullpen or batting practice Monday, Joe Girardi said the absence didn’t set him back.

“Personal reasons, we expect him back I believe [Tuesday],’’ Girardi said. “It was not a throw day for him, so it worked out well.’’

Cashman said Chapman also will be excused at a later date. The general manager said he doesn’t have any knowledge of Chapman’s situation in regards to a suspension for being involved in an alleged domestic violence incident last October, in which he fired a gun inside the garage of his home.

“I can’t expect anything. I have no expectations,’’ Cashman said. “It’s on a time frame that only [Manfred] and his office would know. To try and speculate would be a waste of my time. [Manfred] is very methodical, and they have a great investigative team and will make an informed decision. We will support whatever the decision is.’’

Chapman, who was acquired from the Reds for four minor leaguers in late December and installed as the Yankees closer soon after the deal, said last week he would appeal a suspension.

It’s possible a suspension could include Chapman not being allowed to participate in spring training activities. Manfred’s decision could be made this week.
