Seton Hall boosts NCAA tourney hopes with crucial road victory

WASHINGTON — Seton Hall’s NCAA Tournament hopes just got a big boost.

Isaiah Whitehead had 22 points Wednesday night and Seton Hall held off Georgetown 72-64 without making a field goal in the final 14:07.

The Pirates (18-7, 8-5 Big East) made 21 of 25 free throws and 0 of 9 field-goal attempts to hang on after Whitehead’s 3-pointer with 14:08 left made it 51-36.

Khadeen Carrington added 18 points, Desi Rodriguez scored 17 and Angel Delgado grabbed 11 rebounds to go with seven points for Seton Hall. Whitehead was 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

The Hoyas (14-13, 7-7) used a 12-2 run to close within 54-48 with 9:45 left but got no closer. Jessie Govan had a career-high 27 points with four 3-pointers and 10-of-13 shooting. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera added 18 points and L.J. Peak scored 10. Georgetown has lost five of six.

It was coach Kevin Willard’s 100th win at Seton Hall.
