RG3’s bizarre ‘chains’ tweet now least of Redskins’ problems

Robert Griffin III: still tenuously employed by the Washington Redskins, still making some unusual choices in his personal messaging.
The former Rookie of the Year shared a workout photo Tuesday on Twitter with a caption that delved into slavery imagery and phrasing. He also references Kendrick Lamar’s performance at this week’s Grammy Awards, which opened with the rapper wearing shackles in a prison scene.
The 26-year-old Griffin, who spent the 2015 season as Washington’s third-stringer, is expected to be traded or released before March 9, when the Redskins would have to pay him the $16.2 million option they picked up for 2016. He departed the locker room after the season leaving behind a poster with a lengthy mantra inspired by a Mother Teresa poem.

It would be a wonder if the Redskins even noticed. Griffin became a big-name afterthought last season as Kirk Cousins — Griffin’s former backup — emerged as the franchise’s playoff-pilot quarterback. And his social media share came during a stressful time in the NFL calendar.
Cousins is a free agent, and long-term contract negotiations have stalled, according to ESPN. What, you thought the Redskins would set up stability at the sport’s most important position?
The ESPN report stated there is a wide gap between Cousins and the Redskins, and no further talks are scheduled — even if it’s “not contentious.” The team can apply the franchise tag before March 1 to retain Cousins on a one-year, approximately $20 million contract — but for now, the Redskins are posturing tough about going in an altogether different direction.
