Prokhorov turns Nets GM limbo into not-so-funny joke

Say this about the Nets: They may be bad, but they’re never boring.

A day after the Nets offered their general manager job to Sean Marks, word in NBA circles circulated that the Spurs assistant GM turned down the position.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov insisted he hadn’t made an offer to Marks or anybody else — and probably won’t for another week.

“I think we made a great job and frankly speaking, I’m doing more listening than speaking. What I can say: We have no trouble finding terrific two guys [a GM and a coach] to join our team,” Prokhorov said. “I think I need maybe one week more. We have a short list, and I’m here for the decision-making.’’

That short list includes former Suns and Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo, Denver assistant GM Arturas Karnisovas and Houston VP of basketball operations Gersson Rosas. (The Nets had also asked for permission to talk to Wizards assistant GM Tommy Sheppard, who never interviewed.)

The Post had been the first to report Brooklyn’s interest in Marks on Feb. 9, and on Tuesday night The Post confirmed a Yahoo report that the Nets had offered him the job.

Multiple reports Wednesday morning claimed the 40-year-old New Zealander was leaning toward declining the offer.

When Prokhorov was asked directly about Marks on Wednesday afternoon, he used humor to deflect the question, telling a different tale with the same ending: The Nets still searching for a GM.

“I’ve never heard this name [Sean Marks] before. … If you want, we can vote now. Help me with your wishes?” Prokhorov joked mischievously.

While Prokhorov was kidding about never having heard of Marks – whose Spurs boss, R.C. Buford, is friends with Prokhorov confidant and search committee member Sergey Kushchenko – he gave a clear denial when asked again if he’d offered Marks the job.

“No,” Prokhorov answered. “As soon as we are ready, we’ll let you know immediately. We have respect for all the candidates. I’m here. No decision made for time being.’’

Prokhorov also said he won’t rush the decision despite the NBA trade deadline being 3 p.m. Thursday.

“No, we are not in a hurry,’’ he said. “My perception is first we need to find GM, because my perception is that (the) GM should have input on whom the head coach should be.’’
